Oak gates are incredibly popular. They are growing in demand as people feel they make a statement for their home. There are many other reasons why people are looking to install oak gates. These may include safety, security and appearance.
Here we made an oak gate for a customer in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. Our clients wanted a gate to last longer than the standard ones from the high street. Selecting a high-quality gate was very important to them.
This is really important for clients looking to install front gates for their home. There are cheaper alternatives. However, this is false economy as they will not last and they are likely to become problematic.
It was made from Ex. What does this mean? Ex means the plank started out rough at 27mm thick, then gets planed down to about 23mm thick. These gates were made of 27mm European Oak front boards and Ex 40mm back braces.
Did you know the back braces should always be thicker than the front boards? This is one of the main differences between bespoke wooden gates and those bought off the shelf. Unfortunately, when you buy an off the shelf gate, they are all the same.
The top of the gate has a tapered water throw away. This means that when it rains, water does not seep through the end grain. The front boards are 150mm wide and the back braces 120mm wide. The picture above shows the gate treated but unfinished.
