A floating oak shelf is incredibly popular and can be used in many rooms within your home to create character. This forms a cost-effective solution to creating a real statement which so many people are looking for.
We recently fitted this floating oak shelf in Holmes Chapel using solid European Oak which was 170mm deep x 70mm thick. We use only the highest quality grade oak which offers our clients with assurance that it will not bend and warp.
There are many floating shelves on the market and so many of them are either not manufactured or fitted properly. For the installation process, we get 20mm solid stainless-steel rods. Did you know that you can’t use iron or standard steel as it turns the Oak blue if it comes into contact with any moisture?
These stainless-steel rods were about 230mm long and are fixed half of it into the Oak and the other half into the wall. This ensures that there is no movement and that the floating shelf will remain in place for a long time. There is generally 3 of these in a 1200mm shelf.
We can fit standard square pieces, or you can have Wayney edge (the barked edge) piece up to 70mm thick. Always remember kiln dried Oak only goes up to 100mm thick, after that it is classed as air dried or seasoned. It makes a big difference as air dried Oak will spilt a lot more when you bring it indoors.
